Each of us has encountered abrasive personalities. They're all around us. At the grocery store, on the road and even at work. While one shouldn't make a judgment call on a single, chance encounter, there are ways to ascertain if someone with whom you work (or live with for that matter) is an evolved person. I don't mean evolved as in, from ape to man, I mean the person they are inside - their soul, if you will. This will always be revealed by the walk the person walks, not just their talk. I've been to plenty of churches where people claim to follow "Jesus" and his teachings about loving one another, but their actions speak way louder than their words. Let's take a look at the differences between a truly evolved person and, well... An ape.

Compassion - for all living things. Have you ever had a rough day and a compassionate person puts their arms around you and gives you a big, comforting hug? That's A beautiful example of compassion. In contrast, let's say if things aren't going well in someone's life and they meet up with a buddy. the conversation progresses, and after they bare their soul, their friend starts to brag about how good they have it. I used to know a person who would tell people having a rough time to suck it up because things could be much worse. That is not compassion.

Courtesy. Almost everyone drives nowadays. and regardless of what one might think, being locked in a car while driving down the road does not make you morally or personally atonomous. Do they let you in if you are waiting with your signal blinking? Do they also use their turn signal? Do they cut you off, not because there is a truck parked in their lane or something and they had no forewarning, but for no reason at all? There would be a lot less road rage if all people adopted common courtesy into their daily commutes.

Kindness. Very similar to compassion, but have you been without enough money for lunch and a friend buys you you a meal, never expecting anything in return? That's huge. You will only fully appreciate that if you've gone hungry before, which I have.

Use of power. Narcissism can be categorized as a sickness or it can also be someone knowingly wielding their power for their own purposes or to hurt someone else. I've known several people along the path who knew a fabulous worker, a true team-player with years of experience and yet they still passed them over for job opportunities, promotions or raises. It is a truly evolved person who possesses great power and uses it to help his or her fellow human.

Awareness. People who conduct conversations in public on their mobile phones as if they were singers at a rock concert. Totally not aware. People who, while shopping, leave their cart in the middle of the aisle and no one else can get around. Oh, they see you there, but they couldn't care less. Those same people, I guarantee, are the people who don't return said carts to the designated rack but leave them in a parking spot, or even worse, against another car. Being aware of one's personal surroundings and offering other people to pass by, go first or even replacing an item that has dropped on the floor regardless of who knocked it over is the mark of an evolved soul.

Can one make the conscience decision to incorporate these and other positive changes into their life? You bet they can. This is the exact moment of evolution.
